Description
Spanglish for “The Big Cat”. Super fun, crowd pleaser of a chart! The Mambo groove 2-3 clave features the entire horn section playing the melody. The key to making it sound good is to not overblow the unisons/octaves. Keep it light! Solos are in the Alto 1 chair although, it could be opened up for anyone (only 4 chords repeated). “Tower of Power” type backgrounds lead into either a drum/perc. Solo or a new section of the tune based on Coltrane, “Giant Step” changes in 2-3 clave. I almost always cut from m. 116 to 147 when performing this chart.
