Zhang Xiaolu
Zhang Xiaolu is Professor and Director of Jazz Studies at Shanghai Conservatory of Music. As a saxophonist, he is a unique and most compelling voice in today’s China saxophone society. He straddles the classical style and jazz style of playing with equal ease. At age 28 he achieved the position as the president of Shanghai Saxophone Association. In 2005 he formed “Shanghai Eastern City Saxophone Ensemble” which is one of the earliest professional saxophone ensembles in China. He was invited as a soloist to play his saxophone concerto “East Cool” at the ceremonial closure concert of the XIV World Saxophone Congress in Slovenia. His piece “East Lake 1522”, “East Rhythm” has been performed by Shanghai Conservatory of Music Jazz Ensemble, University of Northern Colorado Jazz Lab Band, George Mason University Jazz Ensemble, and University of Nebraska–Lincoln Jazz Ensemble, this piece was broadcasted by Shanghai Radio Station. 2012 he was invited to Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, and conducting the Bigband der Hochschle fur Musik und Theater Hamburg with SHCM Jazz Ensemble concert at NDR which was broadcasted. At that time he also gave master class at Hochschle fur Musik und Theater Hamburg. Recently he has been invited to give master class at Berklee College of Music, University of Gothenburg, University of Texas, University of Nebraska and Kansas University etc. He is an endorsing artist for YAMAHA Saxophones and Rico Reeds. He is also the host of‘2007, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018 Shanghai Conservatory International Jazz Education Festival’, and ‘2019 Asia Saxophone Congress’.
Since 2015 he designed ‘Funote Music’ instrumental curriculum system for K12 student, now over 500 schools and 100,000 students use ‘Funote Music’ system in China.
