Description
As recorded by Mats Holmquist, Randy Brecker, Dick Oatts and Latvian Radio Big Band on the album "Big Band Minimalism" (Summit/MAMA Records 2017).
The title Friends & Enemies refers to "The story of two chords" GMaj7 and FMaj7. When the G chord is placed on top of the F chord "they are in harmony" but when the F chord is placed on top of the G chord thety are "enemies (dissonant). A simple theme is developed with many variations. The intro, which is a drum solo with backgrounds uses harmonic ideas from Igor Stravinsky's Symphonies of wind instruments. After a long development all ends well in harmony. An interesting "tale" with elaborate harmonic constructions.
”Mats Holmquist is one of the jazz world’s finest composers and arrangers."
