Description
45-minute long-form suite presented in 4 continuous movements. Powerful and challenging ensemble chart with complex orchestration, layers of driving rhythms, esoteric melodies - each movement has a different character. Many moments of open solo sections intertwined within the through composition and includes a full band free improvisation section, with cues led by the conductor. Conductor is important because of many cued sections. Inspired by the composer’s family immigration story from Syria, Lebanon, and Greece, it is a narrative of perseverance to finding peace and initiating growth by virtue of change and adversity by embodying the emotional process behind the persistent drive to cultivate the freedom to create without fear. Commission by Los Angeles Jazz Society’s 2018 New Note Artist Award.
